Hey everyone – I received a notification from our email service tonight (MailChimp) that their automated bot had detected a violation of their “Acceptable Use Policy” with our account. This is how our Health Bulletins get sent. I’ve reviewed the policy and am not sure how we violated it, but MailChimp will not let us send anything through the service until the issue is resolved (I’ve contacted support but no word back yet).
I’m putting all of the content for tonight’s bulletin in this blog post. Sorry for the inconvenience. I hope to have everything resolved by tomorrow. -Case
Why Lean Body Mass is Important
One of the keys to staying healthy and performing well is building and maintaining lean body mass (LBM).
While many of us have heard the term “lean body mass,” it’s important to understand everything that falls under this umbrella term.
Lean body mass (LBM) is the total weight of your body, minus your fat mass. LBM includes the weight of your organs, skin, bones, body water, and muscle mass.
Structures of the organs, skin, and bones can be improved with healthy diet and exercise, but the variable over which we have the most control is muscle mass.
So what is an adequate amount of LBM? It depends on your age, height, gender, and goals, but outside of extreme circumstances (e.g bodybuilders with tons of extra muscle), the more lean body mass you have the better.
Here are some of the benefits of building more lean body mass (you can dig deeper into these in the article below):
- More LBM increases your base metabolic rate, and can help keep off pounds of body fat
- It supports the immune system, and helps the body recover from serious illness
- Higher levels of muscle mass and thus higher LBM can help improve bone health and bone density
- More LBM protects against insulin sensitivity
- Building more lean mass in earlier decades of life can help you maintain more LBM later in life.
